so i was looking at some british car magazine the other day and there are apparently these car clubs that one can join that allow you to drive a variety of luxury/sport/classic cars depending on which kind of club you join. for 50k you can join a club and have use of aston martin, ferrari enzo, mercedes slk etc. sounds cool.
five- i thought i'd be able to find something online but i couldnt will have to track down the mag. latest issue of car, in case you live next to barnes and noble. or you could send the 50k to me and i'll see they get it.
maybe because some of us dont have bands, and even if we do, we can fit it in a regular 4-door car
maybe because we can fit the models (of course not extra-large ones) into cars or wagons - in all my years of work i have never had to haul a huge model
maybe because we can do without huge gas guzzlers and do our bit for the environment????
i used to be a valet, and I once found a copy of dwell in the biggest ford pickup I've ever driven. Those hummer ads are obviously confusing some people.
the old sage....I got the exact same sans the baby seat. I'm dying to get the winter snows off ( the ones with the black steel rims ) makes it look like a cop car and get into a new set of summer slicks.
73 VW beetle convertible (currently being restored)
90 Mustang GT 5.0L (stolen twice - didn't come back the second time)
00 Honda Civic EX Coupe (share w/ the wife)
02 Triumph Speed Triple w/ hi-level carbon fiber exhaust and other carbon fiber goodies! (that's a motorcycle for all you cagers!)
thom mayne: civic hybrid
frank gehry: prius
bernard tschumi: ferrari f40
peter eisenman: a steam-powered locomotive and a clydsedale-powered wagon
zaha: a man on a leash
1983 Mercedes 300SD (diesel) ~250k mi (i'm only responsible for the last 30k) Still working on converting it to SVO. I hit a deer on the interstate a few years ago, thus no power steering, or AC. I did weld together a replacement grill of my won design. It's a damn fun car, I just wish i had more time for it. Oh, and it's black. Oh, and it really needs to last me through grad school (and probably a few years afterwards).
71 scout II (hated it then; would love it now)
> 58 edsel ranger (never my daily car)
> 86 mustang svo (too much car for a high school kid)
> 90 honda elite (scooter: stolen, recovered but totalled)
> carless for 2 yrs
> 84 bronco II (spent most of its time parked; finally sold it)
> carless for 1.5 yr
> 74 volvo 242 (one of my favorites ever)
> 86 volvo 245 (totalled while parked at home after i had it 3 mos)
> 89 alfa romeo milano (fun but temperamental)
> 91 volvo 765 (wagon)
> 03 honda civic hybrid (my mileage more than doubled)
up until this last car, my cars were always at least 10 yrs old.
Since posting over a year ago, I sold my car (as an NYC resident, I don't need a car) and my usual form of transportation is the R142A subway car. It's a sweeeeet ride.
jj, word. used to take this lovely li'l lady to work
see the italianateish church steeple in the pic? used to live right across the street from it...my window opened out right onto the tracks. god i miss the el.
now i rock a black 03 "old-school" prius, although the wife is going to let me finally get a vespa and she's gonna trade in the prius for a volvo station wagon. she works at home, doesn't drive much.
still. ok. my attempt at irony and visual representation has utterly failed. suffice it to say, i used to walk to the sheridan el stop (4400N/1200W) and squeeze into the friendly confines of a red line train to the loop every morning at 7.30 in hopes that i would actually be at work by 8.30.
i do still miss the el, austin has no public transit except the bus, and that's not cool. i used to sit in my apartment at night and watch the trains go by. people said i was nuts, living right next to the el, that i would sustain some low-level hearing loss. but try finding a freshly rehabbed jumbo studio with hardwoods and brand-new everything in "wrigleyville north" (uptown) for $590 a month these days.
i haven't taken the time to read this whole thread, but this is what i drive, and i love this car. Handles great and gets me into enough trouble with the law.
optimk....I did work on Gressler's VW Show Rooms. I recall the day I went into the Dealers existing facility where they had their dealership intermixed with a number of other manufacturers. When we went into the shop....crap I was shocked cause almost every rack had a VW on it. The shop forman...simply told us, "Ya it is easier to replace the whole damn engine than fix the thing."

interesting how many architects, who are supposedly supposed to do 'good things' for the environment ride huge humungous vehicles
