When people start sentences (especially in class and group meetings) with "I just wanted to say..." Listen hard, and 90% of people in a raise-my-hand-and-talk environment start off that way.

Of course you wanted to say it. Otherwise you wouldn't have put your hand up. And frequently, that isn't "just" what you wanted to say.

People who overuse the word 'space'. As in, "Oh, this used to be a third bedroom but now its a chill-out space". It's the overuse of the term 'space' in general.

Back before I found architecture, I ran into an aquaintance from school who was studying architecture. I was asking about it, and I mentioned something about rooms in a house, to wit she smugly replied "Oh, we dont call them rooms, we call them spaces"...

Annoyed me.

Frankly, even the word architecture grates on me sometimes...

Space is a dubious term anyway - everyone knows it doesnt exist...

I'm a little late to this thread, but did anyone mention the word "contemporary"?

A relative recently me she prefers "soft contemporary" architecture more than "hard contemporary" architecture. This person also turns up her nose when something is "too contemporary."

Also tired of:

-"raw" and "industrial"

-"brown-bagging it" on the way to "lunch and learns"

-"check-in" or "doing a check-in"

-"circle back" ie let's circle back in an hour

-"push back" ie I'm gonna put this in the report, and we'll ask the engineers to push back on this

I am sure this has been posted previously, but I just heard it again this morning:

"We've decided to just do the design work ourselves"

To which I can only respond with a sarcastic cliche: good luck with that.

(This particular potential client's "sketch" for me ignored the existence of all the interior columns in the space. Yeah, good luck with that.)

"The roofs reflect the forms of the mountains beyond."

Sadly, I've seen this in student projects and in the professional world. OK, so you've got a pitched roof and there's a hill in the background. Big woop.

Any time I hear "Value Engineering" I cringe. I know it's a polite way of saying "This is too expensive, make it cheaper and therefore hideous."

Also, when I hear "Keep up the good work," I usually run for Monster.com and update the resume.
