You know what's a good show? Andrew WK. Seriously. I've seen some great shows (Black Sabbath, original line up, APC, Tool, Tori Amos), but AWK was the most fun I've had at a show EVER. Not a person was still. Scenesters, mullets, rockers; everyone was going nuts. Like 40 people were on stage rocking out with AWK. The ticket was $18 and they played with the Locust (also awesome although most people call them faggots and say they suck 'cause they are super weird). If you get a chance, and even remotely think AWK is catchy or just want to get all sweaty and rock out, then see AWK.
I think Hasselhoff is right about the music climate. What kills me is the lack of raw talent and creativity that was seen in bands like Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Doors, etc.. It seems like most artists gave up inventing new sounds and styles, instead resorting to the same retard-level power chords and 1-4-5 progressions (not to get too carried away in musical jargon) that have been the foundation of virtually all "rock" music in the last few years. This isn't to say there's no more creativity in the industry; That's why I love music from Radiohead, MF Doom, Serart, Pierre Bensusan, Clint Mansell, I could go on. Maybe it's just my limited exposure to what people listen to nowadays (all I hear is OAR and Dispatch in studio), but I can't appreciate music that any moron with a guitar and 3 months experience could create. For God's sake, where's Roger Waters when the music industry needs him?
By the way, strange names don't make a good band. What the fuck is Neutral Milk Hotel supposed to mean?
Yeah, you're right: good music is what makes a good band, not the name. The name is irrelevant. I mean, what the fuck is "Radiohead" supposed to mean? Why are some people so judgmental? Why does it make people feel good to denounce others' music because they think it's shite? Why don't you do them a favour and lend them something "tasty" instead of calling them out?
The fact of the matter is that finding good music is hard, and most people don't care to take the time to find what they really like; it's much easier to just eat what is fed to you. Your problem has nothing to do with bands and everything to do with the loss of control of our own culture. So, get to it: tell everyone about your newest fav band from some local act, or lend a disc to a friend who thinks Nickelback invented rock. The record companies exist to make a buck, and they'll do whatever sells, regardless of how much anyone whines. Get used to it, or do something about it.
There's plenty of completely original stuff happening in music, but I guess not rock music from what you're saying. Listen to some idm, modern orchestral, ambient or jazz and you'll hear plenty of original sounds and styles...
I agree with Zeibin about the big record companies too... wrote a quite long rant about it recently in fact.
Zeibin, you seem to answer all of your own questions. I am judgemental of music because I refuse to just eat what is fed to me, and I denounce others' music because I do in fact think it's shite. I don't really see a problem with expressing distaste in something I don't like. As far lending others something "tasty", I gave the names of 5 different artists that I believe make "good" music. Obviously, I doubt there is a person in this forum that hasn't heard of Radiohead, but hopefully the others aren't as well known, and I think they're geniuses. If I come off as too negative, it's because I like to think popular music should have much more to offer than it currently does. That's not to say I know what "good" music is, nor do I think there exists an objective "good" standard, but I think music should at least involve an inkling of musical talent or even mastery of an instrument like so many popular musicians before this generation. Being somewhat of a musician myself, I am confident enough to say I play well, but am not foolish enough to claim I meet my own standards of good music. So, I try my best to "do something about it", but often to no avail. I just wish there were more recent artists that take my breath away like Elvis did, and Zeppelin, and Hendrix (I hope I live long enough to see another performer like him), and so on.
