according to one of the associates in my year out practice, listening to music was against company policy, the same company policy that decidewd the office was going to be open plan.
I love This American Life. Those shows got me through charrettes in school. When you do tedious computer things (Illustrator, etc) it is good to have 1 hour of entertainment.
Joe Henry 'Tiny Voices'
Jayhawks 'Rainy Day Music'
Wilco 'Ghost is Born'
Tom Waits 'Real Gone'
John Cale 'Hobo Sapiens'
My Morning Jacket 'Acoustic Citsuoca'
Stevie Wonder 'Talking Book', 'Innervisions', and 'Fulfillingness...' ALWAYS work.
steven, i saw tom waits in seattle last month for the release of 'real gone'. it was his only show in the states this year. 2.75 hours of groveling. he puts on an amazing show.
not this year. he did one show in seattle and one in vancouver. that's it. hopefully he will do some more next year. over the years, he seems to have become even more reclusive.
what happens when i start to think about great studio music is that each artist, album or musical era (personal interest at the time) becomes vividly associated with that particular studio/thesis deadline...nice way to remember sleepless nights, potential ulcers and good times the next day!
to reiterate my favs

BTW, I saw Arcade Fire in San Francisco, and they are INSANE live!!! For those who know them- for Laika, two of the guys put on motorcycle helmets, and beating on their heads with drum sticks!!! and.. regina is UNBEARABLE on stage. It's cute that she's into the music THAT much, but even that wears out pretty quickly!
last night i had the opportunity to see akron/family at a goddamn house show.
psychadelic-bluegrass-folk-rock
they are touring with michael gira, and i think backing him as the angels of light right now.
anyone into the stuff put out on young god (besides gira's masturbatory works, devendra banhart) or the animal collective type vein would probably enjoy this.
the last place i worked they listened to nothing but top-40 commercial radio all f***ing day. i'm really glad i don't work there any more...
lately it's been les breastfeeders or the Konks if i need some energy and am doing something repetative...
I dig out some American Analog Set and Smog (or some other yo la tengo-like band) for mid-late afternoon work... or i'll listen to "this american life" online if i'm just drafting...
people dont know about this guy in the US, but his work is unbearably amazing: nitin sawhney.

Let me know what tunes (cd's) you listen to, which help you get through the daily grind. Maybe you have an 'ultimate architecture compilation'?
and if they don't let you listen to music, well, i'm so sorry for your life!
according to one of the associates in my year out practice, listening to music was against company policy, the same company policy that decidewd the office was going to be open plan.
