The Beijing Pavilion, designed for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, was inspired by traditional Chinese calligraphy, long considered the essence of Chinese aesthetics and culture. Using curvilinear shapes derived from a certain style of calligraphy, the pavilion's natural circulation winds through a meandering space that is carved out by such shapes.
The exterior of the pavilion is finished with structural meshed metal panels, which large interior surfaces are translucent membranes that work as surround screens during the world expo.
This design was a finalist among 22 entries, and the scheme is planned to be adopted as permanent structure for a media museum.
