K+D House is a refined transformation of a 1930s warehouse into a bespoke residential space, situated within Islington’s Whitehall Park Conservation Area. This sensitive conversion preserves the building’s industrial character while introducing modern elements that enhance its spatial relationships and connection to the surrounding environment. The design maintains the structure’s original flat roof and robust form, while subtly incorporating a double-height stairwell and strategically placed openings to maximize natural light and views.
The first-floor bedroom is connected to the park through carefully framed windows, enhancing the sense of openness and light. The design also introduces a loft space beneath a new pitched roof, offering panoramic views of nearby trees. A striking spiral staircase, constructed from brick, rises through the building as a modern reimagining of local architectural detailing, creating a sense of vertical movement and drama. The careful integration of old and new elements creates a harmonious relationship between the warehouse’s industrial origins and its residential reinvention. The project stands as a nuanced exploration of how to sensitively adapt an existing building while allowing contemporary living to coexist with its historical fabric.
