Blockmakers Arms is a careful conversion of a mid-19th-century former public house into a modern family home within London’s Regents Canal Conservation Area. The project combines the ground and first floors into a spacious duplex while retaining the second-floor apartment’s independence. A key intervention is the relocation of an external staircase from the rear to a side passage, creating a raised walkway that leads to a self-contained apartment on the upper floor. This adjustment enhances the connection between the interior and garden, while providing privacy from neighboring properties.
Externally, solid brickwork and pigmented precast concrete elements complement the building’s historical character, creating a cohesive dialogue with its Georgian surroundings. Internally, period features such as timber paneling are preserved, while new additions like the internal staircase and open-plan living spaces introduce a contemporary sensibility. The careful balance of old and new allows for a harmonious integration of modern living within a historic framework. Blockmakers Arms exemplifies an approach to architecture that respects heritage while embracing a minimalist, functional aesthetic.
