Farnell Farm

Set within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, involves the adaptive re-use of a light-industrial agricultural barn into a guesthouse, part of a larger 345-acre arable estate in Kent. The barn, originally designed for equipment storage, is reimagined with a focus on enhancing its natural surroundings. The conversion retains a third of the original structure as a working barn, while the rest is transformed into a guesthouse with open-plan living and communal spaces, with large windows framing sweeping views of the landscape and surrounding woodland.

The design carefully integrates sustainability with aesthetic sensitivity, using the existing steel frame and corrugated cladding for the new façade, adding insulation from within. The two first-floor guest rooms incorporate an existing mezzanine, preserving the character of the barn’s structure while introducing modern amenities. The project not only reflects a thoughtful approach to design and sustainability but also seeks to balance the preservation of rural heritage with contemporary living.
