Located in the Old City section of Philadelphia, chef Jose Garces’ first restaurant is Spanish in its essence. Inspired by a research trip to Spain, the design incorporates an authentic feel with a modern re-interpretation of a tapas restaurant. Guests are welcomed by a flood of warm light from blackened metal light fixtures. Rustic furniture, constructed from reclaimed lumber collected from deconstructed buildings, accents the floor. Along the 20 ft. bar, against an elegant backdrop of aged black cabinetry, imported canned goods, cheeses, and hung Serrano ham legs are the highlight of the design. An array of objects such as wine bottles, plates and sangria barrels, is transformed as part of the decoration, and blends in with the understated design of the 150 seat restaurant. The constant movement spilling out of the open kitchen adds to the dynamic atmosphere, while the lounge area and the private dining room serve as tranquil alternatives. As with all other crème designed spaces, every corner is not equally designed but given it’s own unique character. During flamenco nights, guests gather around the elevated platform stage surrounded by an airy screen. The energy of the performance fills the entire floor and creates a synergy with the equally lively dishes being served, resulting in an almost illusionary dining experience.
