You ain't getting me to apologise

OK, I haven't been able to post very regularly so far. I'm not going to apologise about it, I've been busy, what with work, studying and helping to build an extension. Spare time has been few and far between. So I'm going to write a quick update, and its back to work. I've got details to do dammit!

Seriously though, the year had a little shaky start, but it's starting to smooth out, and us part-timers have our teeth into a nice little project. It's for a single person dwelling in Dundee, Scotland. The site is in the back garden of a Victorian terrace house. The house has a garage, which we can adapt, or knock down and build upon the footprint. All in all the site is 4m x 10m.

Our studio lecturers are very keen on the use of spatial models to explore situations and solutions. So presently I have about 8 1:100 models showing the progress of design. I'm quite pleased with myself because I haven't actually touched a computer yet to help design it (apart from researching the net), and I've found that my work has progressed at a good pace. I have the spatial model that I am going to progress into plan/section/elevation/3D model ready for final review in two weeks time. So its all systems go. I'll try and post some images and explain the design in another post.

So thats where I'm at. Say some of the full timers crits yesterday, and their work was very widely ranged in quality, there was some interesting designs, but I think that some of them had struggled to grasp the fact that the site is small, and the way people live. Some of them seemed obsessed with creating actual rooms, rather to live in. And when the undertone of the project is to investigate spatial quality, I think some of them didn't get it.

On a final note Will Alsop is giving a lecture at the Lincoln School of Architecture tomorrow, which I have managed to get the afternoon of work to go catch. I've been told he is a good speaker. I have no real experience of him other than what I've read in the press. But I'm looking forward to it. I'll post about that as well.

    D
