Well today I am ill, stuck down by the lurgy that is going around at the moment. Currently I am off work for today, try halfheartedly to work on our new project.
Our mission this time is to design an observatory within a nature reserve in lincoln. The site is designated an SSSI (site of specific scientific interest) by English Nature, which as I found out yesterday, means that in the real world you can not do anything to it apart from walk around, let alone turn it into a building site. It is designated a SSSI because the habitat is full of rare dragonflies, flora and fauna.
Before we can even think about a design our lecturer has instructed us to research heavily into both the act of observation and the site itself. I am looking forward to getting my teeth into this one, so far I have struggled in my approach to my projects, relying a little too heavily on computers, than the reasoning behind the design. to try and combat this I have bought myself a small A5 sketchpad, which I will try to use all the time, jotting down notes and observations. My lecturer has identified that I too often go straight for the jugular, probably to my background as a Architectural technologist, in that job i'm always thinking about the detail, rather than the scheme of things. So on the first page of the sketch book I have written 'Think about the problem... Question.... Do not rush to the end' this hopefully should jog my memory every time. Another problem that I have is that if I get very frustrated is something does not go to plan. For example, for the Gallery_Garden project I developed a set of principals I wanted to follow and then did a design which didn't really follow those principles, that frustrated me but in the end I came back with a design that I was extremely happy and worked really well.
Anyway to lighten the mood some random observation of the phenomenon that is Sky Digital.
-12 channel of Movies and not a single decent film on
-There's a wine channel???
-There are too many property programs on, there's even a couple of channels dedicated to them...
-Teleshopping, who buys this stuff??
-Why are kids cartoons so random these days?
Right back to feeling rough

Interesting reading Darren, no really! Like the observations on Sky Digital, I wholeheartedly agree.
I'm at Strathclyde myself finishing fourth year, how do you find Lincoln? I think I got a brochure from them once...
Lincolns OK, to be honest because I am part time and not on campus all the time, I don't get the full architecture student experience, which is a shame, but on the plus side I really enjoy going. Our lecturer is a really sound guy and has a lot of time for us. I think he is getting frustrated with the quality of work from the first year full timers, and he see us as breath of fresh air every week.
There was a few teething problems at the start where the lecturers didn't realise that us part timers existed. Which we found extremely annoying considering that they advertised the course in the prospectus and quite happily took my companies money. But eventually that was sorted, and they have recognized that they need to structure a better part time course.
All in all I am really getting into the course and enjoy going every week, it certainly makes a change from everyday work.
