This project was a very quick one, two/three weeks at the most...

    Brief
To start of with we were tasked with watching Franco Zeffirelli's film version of Romeo & Juliet. This film is pretty much true to Shakespeares original, we had to take note of themes running through the storyline, as well as any other observations that we may make.

From this we had to identify what we thought were the three main scenes in the film and create a theatre set that could be used for these scene's...

Unfortunately I do not have any photos of the model I made, but i've got some concept sketches...

    The Concept
The concept is that of division, the two houses split by their feud are represented either side of the stage by the two sets of balconies and archways, angled so as to give a false perspective and sense of depth to the stage. These are linked in the centre with a walkway or bridge, flanked by columns, representing the link between the two families... Romeo & Juliet. These two characters eventually even though tragically by death unite the two families and cause them to stop feuding.

The revolve on the side of the Capulets provides the balcony in the scenes of interaction between Romeo & Juliet, and a cross, for the scenes of religious significance during the play.

The pit in the centre of the floor provide a place to lift or lower a plinth for the final death scene in which both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide.

Lighting plays an important part in the scene setup, in some scenes, such as the balcony scene, specific areas will be lit only, to provide a focus for the audiences attention. For more widespread scene, such as the banquet and marketplace scenes, the lighting shall be more widespread, suited to the particular scene.
