Key Word

NORTH KOREA
COMPACT CITY
POROCITY

The way of communication between architecture and a city is strictly limited in North Korea, which means people in North Korea has been deprived the opportunity to choose how and where to live.

This project started on a hypothesis of what if North Korea will open to global economy, which must make lots of conflict due to the disjuction between what they have and what they need.

Main concept is to make porosity between programs that include artists’ residence, exhibition area, co-working space, amenities and retails. Porosity serves as a transition space where people use it as meeting, event space, which is about flexibility among programs.

Design Concept

Rigid system of facade shows how North Korea has designed their city and architecture all this time.
In keeping with the coherence of urban design, strategy is to transform the perimeter of inner housings and court yard to make the complex flexible following diverse needs in program and space.
