In Los Angeles, where the unusual has shifted from the periphery of architectural discourse to the center a mixed use project (hotel, theater, commercial) offers an opportunity to experiment with these common typologies. Here ambiguity blurs the distinction of use. Functionality is referenced only by the change of the sulci-like fenestration, which traverses the facade and runs transparent at the hotel end of the complex to translucent at the theater end. This fenestration is augmented by chamfered zones of exposed cellular compositions within the exterior "tissue." Like a brick falling into tall grass, the massiveness of this complex is juxtaposed to an ethereal landscape of synthetic vegetative canopies, which indexes the landing of Sul.CA.
