An illuminated manuscripts library situated within a corner condition of the dense, traditional, and ornamental urban fabric of Graz, Austria presents an opportunity for non-traditional, abstract translations of massing and voids. In this case the low voids and high massing relationships of the urban fabric were carried over. However, the horizontal voids of the neighboring buildings were stretched vertically creating the dualism of a dynamically whittled envelope, and a spatial system, which breaks through the massing creating a volumetric relationship between the lower voids and the upper internal spaces. This coupled with an indirect, light-dark-light processional organization produces an overall affect of the sublime.
