This studio was a semester long partner project exploring the development of a residential high-rise in the heart of San Francisco. My Partner and I investigated the nature of an urban environment through the construction of the city context. The discovery that San Francisco was built mostly on generations of infill, reinforced our view of the city as a patchwork of both physical layers and history. With this in mind, we constructed an urban context model from scraps and remnants of our previous projects in order to produce a meaningful depiction of this layered, urban patchwork.
Realizing that each piece of the city is entirely unique, we designed the tower in a way which reflects the unique history of the site and makes each apartment unit entirely unique depending on its location within the high-rise. A glass shell shapes the windows for each apartment so that the window configuration for each apartment changes depending on its location. Gardens placed at 10 story intervals further emphasize the unique location of each apartment within the high-rise.
