Study of Thom Mayne’s Sixth Street Residence

In my Third Year Studio we were tasked to study an existing building in two ways.  First: to reproduce it, and second: to double the existing volume.  Beyond this we were given no other parameters.  The experiment which follows is an exploration of a project without boundaries.  Without boundaries any intervention is likely to grow, take over what is there until it doubles the existing volume, and then continue to expand.  The absence of restriction or purpose became much like a vacuum.

Architecture without program, without function, without people.  In this void there is a parasite which grows without regard to function, form, or inhabitance.  With out people we are left with the Vacuum.
