NEW BUILDING IN A HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT: STUDY OF APARTMENT BUILDING AND SHOPS IN PLAKA, ATHENS

The plot is located on the corner of Thucydides and Apollo, is angular and scale is 418.9 square meters. Currently used as car parking.
The design was determined by two main factors. Firstly, it attempted to break the building volume in smaller pieces, so as the new building to keep pace with its neighbors and in harmony with the environment (old neoclassical buildings). The total volume was ordered to the east and north of the site, continuing the strong facade that creates the neoclassical Street Thoukididou. Secondly, the maintenance of the old wall that exists in the plot and the traces of the previous building played a crucial part in planning.
The building consists of 2 main blocks, an independent house in the south and a three-storey apartment building in northern. Furthermore, the stairwell of the building, the entrance to the underground parking and a small loft in contact with the party wall of the old site are independent volumes made of metal construction.
