Wood Prefabricated Architecture_Sustainable Neighborhood in Quartucciu

Degree Thesis_A.Y.2011_2012.  The project aims to create a district in the municipality of Quartucciu, in the province of Cagliari, made in accordance with green criteria and environmental sustainability and to achieve energy efficiency in buildings. The lots are included in a range of 5 hectares between Via Segrè and Via Mameli. The Urban Planning classifies the area as subdistrict C5 and requires that the total building volume has to be divided into: 60% for residential use, and 40% for G services (business services to citizens). The project aims to built multi-storey buildings with four levels. A central volume, that hosts stairs and elevators, is included between two volumes, wich on the GF are devoted to commercial spaces and to apartments in the upper levels. The main goal is to set up sustainable buildings with a thermal behavior close to a passive house, that is a very well-insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by passive solar gain and by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, etc. Energy losses are minimized. Any remaining heat demand is provided by an extremely small source. Avoidance of heat gain through shading and window orientation also helps to limit any cooling load, which is similarly minimized. The building material is wood (Xlam),a very warm material which allows to have low values of thermal transmittance of walls and to achieve energy efficiency in buildings. The Xlam panel is a product engineered in wood that consists of at least three layers of boards in conifer wood, mutually intersecting and glued. The prefabrication thanks to the simple connections allows to reduce costruction times. The project respects also green building criteria: low shape factor, efficient use of solar and wind exposure. The buildings are oriented on the North South axis, with the living and sleeping spaces facing south (in order to receive the maximum solar radiation in winter and less in summer). Even the installations aim for sustainability thanks to solar thermal collectors.
