The Hudson Group and LAS got together over 7 seven years to discuss how they could better utilize the existing Rotunda space at the D Gates. Largely a pass thru space with little more than an information desk, the Rotunda was destined to handle more passengers as the connector to the new E Gates opened in 2012.
Ultimately we proposed 3 independent organic shaped retail structures with a common visual language to unite them. A light and airy open lamella structure, painted white, with a continuous stainless steel fascia for signage and wayfinding created 5 retail units at about 600 sf each.
The concepts included are a Tech on the go electronics store, 5th & Sunset sunglasses, M. Frederick (CA boutique store), Urban Decay cosmetics, and a Swatch store.
The major challenge for the space was the fact that the floor was a slab on grade, with no access to utilities. The sprinklers, power and data lines had to be brought down existing 75 ft tall columns to tie into the structures. We had to trench through 4 inch thick terrazzo to bring floor outlets into the interiors for gondolas and cash wraps.
We had extensive structural analysis to support the lamella structure, and ended up with multiple embedded columns with new footings throughout.
We had a two stage design submittal- the first for the shell spaces which included the structure, lamella and utilities to the lease line. After that we had 5 separate tenant improvement packages for each space.
