Shops at the Ridge

JRDV Urban International is the lead designer of the redevelopment of the Rockridge Shopping Center in Oakland, California. The project includes over 400,000 GSF, making it the largest retail project in the history of Oakland. Phase 1 was completed in 2016 and Phase 2 is currently awaiting construction.

The project serves as both a destination and locally serving retail center, including the largest Safeway store ever built. The project is located on the site of the historic Bilger Quarry, where the Oakland Hills meet the urbanized neighborhoods of Rockridge and Temescal. Furthermore, the project is designed to serve as the commercial link between College Avenue and Piedmont Avenue, two of the finest neighborhood commercial streets in the western USA. The project’s design draws from the rich tradition of understated elegance found in surrounding neighborhoods, incorporating eclectic Mediterranean and craftsman design in a manner tightly integrated with nature.

The site has a complicated ownership that is delaying the construction of Phase 2.  Potentially there will also be some cooperation between the ownership of this site and the historic former California School of Arts and Crafts that immediately abuts the site.
