Maasmechelen Village

JRDV led the master plan for the redevelopment of the former Eisden Mine and was the design architect for Maasmechelen Village, a specialty retail center that is the master plan’s centerpiece.  Together the master plan and retail center established the site of the former coal mine as one of the most important regional tourism and cultural destinations in central Europe.

The design of Maasmechelen Village, the master plan’s prime pedestrian focus, is based upon the region’s rich architectural tradition and includes exceptionally careful attention to the detailing of storefront facades as well as the integration of graphics, awnings, storefront windows, paving, and lighting.

The Eisden Mine master plan defined a vision for incorporating leisure, educational, entertainment and commercial functions, leveraging the cultural heritage of the province of Limburg.  Besides the retail center, the master plan also integrates important historic buildings, a cinema, arts academy, hotel with extensive parklands connected by pedestrian paths and new streetcar to Genk and Brussels.
