For graduation, my project was to design the new city hall of Quito, Ecuador. The site was located on a busy intersection, of the ex-international airport “Mariscal Sucre”, which was closed in 2013 and transformed into an urban park.
My proposal aims to be an element of mediation between the city and the park with a public square opened to the surrounding buildings as a “door” to the park.
The square is divided in three unique street corners. Extending over the entirety of the square, both open areas and interior space, is a large roof that provides sanctuary for pedestrians from the inclement weather. This covering also provides support for the suspended pathway that connects each building.
The program included the design of offices, exhibition spaces, a community room and the council chamber.
