This pavilion was built by the alumni of NCKU Department of Computer Science (Class of 1967) out of gratitude for the life in the old department building and encouraging expectations for future incoming students. With the changing times and the expansion of the student body plus the faculty, multiple renovations took place at this department building due to the growing need for space. As of now architectures from various eras coexist, demonstrated by the many different materials, construction methods, and spatial concepts. Another important mission would be to adopt effectively the two wooden trusses left intentionally from the demolition of previous classrooms.
The new pathway site is located within the courtyard that the new and old architectures share. The original concept of the existing circulation surrounds the courtyard and connects the entrance/exit with their relationship consisting of not much intersections aside from the sightline, causing less traffic in the courtyard. From the several site visits, we’ve noticed a potential pathway on site that could break this opposition. In the configuration of the architecture, we intentionally place the representative pavilion at the entrance of the new pathway to mark this kind of interconnection, in an attempt to provide more possibilities for the activities of the interior space and corridors to extend to the courtyard.
In its form and structure, continuing from the new pathway and new entrance, we reverse the two wooden trusses from the old classrooms for them to become a part of the new triangular structure of the pavilion. And through the support of the substructure and the coverage of the transparent polycarbonate panel, the pavilion evolves into a space worth staying.
The design on the whole attempts to offer the users of the pavilion new perspectives about the space and potentials for activities through the redefinition of the site and its structure, all on the basis of affirming and preserving the memories of the past. This is what we mean by the new pathway.
