The design of the Jiaxin Junior High School gymnasium must take into consideration the diversity of the surrounding environment. The site is surrounded by various elements, including residential communities, sports fields, stadiums, and roads. Therefore, the landscape, scale, and layout of the activity center need to adapt to this diversity of surroundings. This is a crucial aspect of the design for this project.
Furthermore, the campus may undergo future expansion, especially on the northern side of the land. Therefore, we need to ensure that the current design not only fits the current state but also seamlessly integrates with future development to avoid potential interface issues during campus expansion.
In the design, we should also consider the campus's texture and axes and approach the surrounding environment with humility to avoid creating an oppressive presence in the neighborhood.
Given budget and space constraints, our design should provide versatile spaces that can also serve as disaster shelters to maximize the building's utility and meet the school's various spatial needs.
In the design, we follow the campus's axes and set the building back on the side facing the community, respecting the campus's skyline and reducing the impact on the community.
The first floor of the activity center features a circular indoor track, designed to connect indoor and outdoor activities through green spaces, landscapes, and the building's form. It also provides space for community activities, serving as an intermediary space between the campus and the community.
The multipurpose disaster shelter (activity center) has a 12-meter high open space that can accommodate three standard badminton courts or function as a full basketball court, with fixed seating for spectators. This space is suitable not only for sports-related classes but also for talent development and indoor technology programs such as drone operation. Additionally, it can be used for stage and performance events, with flexible seating on the east side to accommodate various audience needs, including performances and lectures.
