The site is located in Tainan, Taiwan, a city with a 400-year history. Specifically, the address is No. 62, Cheng Kong Road, about a ten-minute walk from Tainan Train Station.
CK 62 is a 60-year-old house, a post-war period street house typical of the Republican era. This three-and-a-half-story reinforced brick building features a façade of light yellow handmade mosaic tiles, with a distinctive half-round and cantilevered cement panel design.
As a mixed-use design company, our project explores the concept of "Change and Continuity."
**Change 1:** We will completely remove the aluminum windows from the façade and replace them with subdivided cast iron window frames. This will complement the existing façade's subdivisions while upgrading to airtight windows to block out the noise from Chen Kong Road, a major urban thoroughfare.
**Change 2:** Part of the second-floor slab will be cut out using a water jet, and a new steel staircase will be inserted, connecting the arcade space on the first floor to the meeting room on the second floor. This allows the first floor to maintain its commercial use while opening the second floor to the public, maximizing accessibility.
**Change 3:** The original roof and existing skylight extensions will be removed, improving ventilation and natural lighting in the narrow interior space. The roof will be transformed into a rooftop garden, providing an outdoor space within the urban environment.
**Continuity** is our guiding principle for the interior design. The house features 90 cm high tile skirting boards, which, despite their worn and chipped state, still show a continuous band-like line. We will remove the tiles but retain this height element, keeping the walls in their natural cement color. New doors and kitchen partitions will align with this 90 cm division, extending into the bathroom as a contrasting tile line, allowing new interior elements to reflect the old house's vocabulary.
The resulting renovation of this old building will be a versatile space incorporating commercial, office, residential, and various other activities, continuing its mission into the next era.
