Stair Structure at East 183rd Street and Tiebout Avenue (Bronx, NY)

As part of a New York City Department of Design and Construction’s (DDC) Requirements Contract, STV provided structural, civil/site, wall and structure inspection, street lighting and architectural services for the replacement of a 90-year-old step structure, which had fallen into disrepair. The most cost-effective method was to replace the entire 46-foot-tall structure. The new structure consists of a single-span connecting the lower landing with the upper landing without columns. The upper landing was constructed into the rock face and cantilevered out to support the spanning structure, which consists of a steel box beam in the center or “spine” of the stairs. STV also provided construction support services to assist DDC with the unique structure design requirements of the project. It won a Platinum Award in the Special Projects category in the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York's 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards.
