Centre for Dental Studies - Jamia Milia Islamia University

Project Head: Romi Khosla Design Studios

The building has been designed on a 5.24 acre site keeping a provision for a 100-bed hospital to be built on the same site. The college, with nine major departments and six research labs for 200 students, is the largest institute for Dental Studies in New Delhi.

I was responsible for developing the conceptual designs from scratch, working on them through to schematic architectural development, co-ordinating with various structural and services agencies and leading the team into final production drawings.

The central courts, open corridors and configuration of blocks allow natural ventilation, and combined with the North glazing help in reducing air-conditioning loads. The building has a composite structure, with light steel corridors tying up with solid concrete blocks on each floor. These corridors are detached from the blocks, further articulating the structural concept. Two main staircases and lift cores run through the central block, while four steel staircases on the building corners serve as fire escapes.
