CONTEXT
Exedra is situated on the campus of Arsenal Toulouse. The law school is characterized by contrasting elements: ancient and contemporary architecture, mineral and vegetable presence, dynamic and calm spaces.
The need for a student rec area became clear after talking with the law students. The oversaturation of the library and the cafeteria became a contingent point; disparaging school clubs and study groups alike.
PROJECT
Such a complex site demands a deft hand when adding another central element to the composition. The projects central ambition is therefore to be a simplifier in all senses of the term.
First by deleting redundancies. The site is surrounded by three large parking lots, more than enough for full capacity. Allowing for the opportunity to transform the smallest lot into a large park.
In this newly reclaimed space, Exedra seeks to take advantage of the natural flow of students. It emphasizes the path from the city to the heart of the campus. All the while shrouding itself in the ground to maintain the sites complexity. This fault line becomes the seating area. A public gathering space for scholars to discuss in the recess, but also used for rest and contemplation.
