A contemporary home with quirky undertones
A home's biggest strength is the personality imparted by its residents. Experiences from the environment inhabited shapes opinions, which manifests through their design choices. 'Luxury living' is a concept that has evolved and is derived from one's social standing. Therefore, design must employ a strategy that reflects the client's lifestyle in interiors, while making the outcome cohesive and synchronous. This home in Mumbai is a motley of cultural influences.
Situated on the 38th floor of an upscale Mumbai township, this spacious 2,900 SQ FT apartment is built for a multi-generation family of jewellers who wished to reflect their lineage through interior design. The intent was to design and execute eclectic interiors by incorporating cultural influences acquired from different parts of the world. The residents enjoy a feel of expansiveness amidst being in the sky; the interiors are radiant and royal, and a perfect fit for the context. A presence of curated furniture, designer light fixtures, art inspired installations, along with generous usage of timber and marble, are seen throughout the house.
The space is compartmentalised into a living/dining room, a great hall, kitchen, and four bedrooms with attached balconies synchronised with white, brown, and beige shades. The living/dining room has full height glazed windows that presents the residents with an uninterrupted view of the Mumbai skyline. A feeling of spaciousness is endowed by means of minimal furniture that facilitates optimal cross-ventilation. With minimal ornamentation, it lets the materials shine; the rooms have an intricate marble flooring pattern accompanied by the warmth of the timber false ceiling. The same palette continues through into the open kitchen, which showcases an island counter, integrating the informal dining space with the living and dining room, all while enjoying an abundance of natural light from the curtain wall. The layout leads into the Great Room, where art installations, contemporary furniture and light fixtures impart character. These spaces are curated for individual functionality and requirements, as seen from the four unique bedroom interiors.
Grace, opulence and luxury is reflected in every bedroom with a unique take on design given the user’s personality. The Master bedroom sets a statement with its herringbone-patterned timber flooring, featuring engineered oak in three shades, providing a sense of organic design amongst opulence. Neutral grey interiors offset the intricate flooring design, and the overall visual is pleasing to the eye. Metal, veneer and fabric tie the space together by implementing strategic accents like matching veneered mirror details and elaborate bedside metal light fixtures.
The son's bedroom is thoughtfully designed, bearing in mind his interests. A graphic illustration adorns the wall behind his bed as he is an automobile enthusiast. The headboard features bespoke lighting embedded into the cladding, adding depth to the mundane blank wall. An exciting feature is the wardrobe, built in a see-through slat fashion, making the room look spacious and airy. Grey and walnut shades in the interiors make a comeback, providing a sense of continuity.
The daughter's bedroom is monochrome with dark themes and bright accents akin to stars in the night sky. Minor details are considered with the theme, including the storage facility. Her bathroom features neon graffiti on the ceiling, a playful touch to suit her artistic personality.
The grandparents' room continues with a sober light walnut theme with simple veneer mouldings. Each room in the residence pays regard to its users' interests and functionality, making it a pragmatic and thoughtfully designed home.
Apart from being aesthetically beautiful, the interiors endorse energy consumption practices by integrating smart home systems in lighting and appliances. Considering natural light and responsive technology, this home is a blend of luxury and practicality.
