The American Academy of Arts and Letters has selected the five recipients of its 2024 Awards in Architecture. The prize, which totals $60,000, is given annually to a select group of both established and emerging architects who have earned distinction in their pursuit of the building trade.
The 2024 program was led by the announcement of SelgasCano as the winner of the 2024 Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize. The Madrid-based practice takes home a $20,000 cash award.
As the 68th winners of the Prize, they follow last year's winner, Professor W. G. Clark of the University of Virginia, and join past Pritzker laureates Francis Kéré and Eduardo Souto de Moura in what should be an encouraging sign that presages potential future major awards wins.
SelgasCano was joined by 27-year-old New York-based studio LevenBetts and UVA landscape architect Julie Bargmann, who received Arts and Letters Awards of $10,000 in recognition of the "strong personal direction" of their respective work.
Architectural historian Beatriz Colomina and visual artist Krzysztof Wodiczko were also announced as winners of the $10,000 Arts and Letters Awards for the ingenuity of their research and ideas about architecture.
This year's selection committee was formed by Toshiko Mori (chair), Deborah Berke, Marlon Blackwell, Merrill Elam, Steven Holl, Michael Maltzan, Nader Tehrani, and Billie Tsien.
The architecture awards will be presented alongside the art, literature, and music awards at the Arts and Letters annual ceremonial event in May.
