A panel discussion featuring David Chipperfield and four of the seven most recent Pritzker Prize laureates will be held virtually on Tuesday, May 23rd from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).
The discussion is being put on in partnership with the NTUA and with the participation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Patras, and Technical University of Crete.
2016 Pritzker Prize winner and former Jury Chair Alejandro Aravena will introduce this year’s laureate David Chipperfield, who will reflect on the work of his non-profit Fundación RIA, market forces’ influence on the design field, climate change, the responsibilities of professional practice, and more.
A discussion between Chipperfield, 2022 winner Francis Kéré, and the 2021 winners Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal will follow, offering an examination of the various pathways, philosophies, and approaches to architecture that led each respectively to the field’s highest honor, which is now in its 52nd year.
“We see architecture as a result, the physical object, and we try to measure architecture by this result. But our concerns cannot only be focused on what we build. We must look at the way we build, how we build, who we build for, and where we build. It is only by going beyond the prescribed responsibilities of architectural practice, by questioning the limits within which architecture operates, that we can properly respond to the existential issues that confront us,” Chipperfield offers.
An overview of Chipperfield’s work will also be presented in depth. The event begins at 3:40 PM Eastern European Summer Time (8:40 AM EST) and proceeds the official Pritzker Prize awarding ceremony, which will be made available later in September. A live stream of the event can be found here.
