The American Academy of Arts and Letters has just announced the five recipients of the 2023 Architecture Awards.
Jurors Toshiko Mori (chair), Deborah Berke, Marlon Blackwell, Steven Holl, Annabelle Selldorf, Nader Tehrani, Billie Tsien, Tod Williams, and Meejin Yoon chose from a group of 36 practices and individuals to select the $20,000 Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize and four $10,000 Arts and Letters Award winners.
University of Virginia Professor W. G. Clark took home the Brunner Prize, joining Pritzker Prize laureates Francis Kéré and Eduardo Souto de Moura, 2022 Soane Medalist Marina Tabassum, and last year’s winner Carme Pinós as past recipients of the top honor, which is now in its 67th year.
He was joined by Office III co-founder Sean Canty, Louisville’s De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop, WORKac, and Princeton University's Fred Bernstein as the four Arts and Letters Award winners. Each was commended for their chosen project’s demonstrated ability to be “characterized by a strong personal direction.”
The academy, which was founded in 1898, also recently announced the election of architects Michael Maltzan, Maurice Cox, and Merrill Elam to its ranks.
