It’s that time of year again for the annual slate of RIBA Awards, beginning with today’s announcement of the House of the Year competition longlist.
The award, formerly known as the Manser Medal, is considered second to only the Stirling Prize on RIBA’s recently expanded annual awards program and has traditionally served as a launching pad for architects within the UK. Last year’s winner was Alison Brooks’ House on a Hill in Gloucestershire, which also won the RIBA South West Award and the RIBA South West Building of the Year in the same cycle.
The early 2022 longlist includes adaptive reuse projects from the Northampton and Norfolk countrysides, the 2022 RIBA East Small Project of the Year-winning Mere House project from Mole Architects, and a host of eco-friendly designs exemplified by Paper Igloo’s Ostro Passivhaus in Stirlingshire.
In total, 20 projects made the cut for the first round of new homes that will eventually be boiled down to shortlisted nominees and presented via the BBC Channel 4’s Grand Designs: House of the Year broadcast.
