Following last week’s initial release of its annual House of the Year shortlist, the Royal Institute of British Architects has announced the next two projects that will, along with five others, vie for the influential award first established by the institute in 2013.
The second update includes projects from Sandy Rendel Architects and Tigg + Coll.
The latter's inclusive design took into consideration their client’s needs by remodeling the existing family cottage into a more user-friendly and adaptable space.
An extension wraps around one side of the existing structure to create a new and more accessible entrance in addition to other “curiously appropriate” interventions that showcase not only the architect's adaptability within constrained timeframes and budgets but also their sensitivity and inspiring humane commitment to the client’s quality of life and disability level.
Sandy Rendel Architects’ Peckham, London design stemmed from the neighborhood’s dire need for affordable homes, answering the call with a two-story abode they call “The Slot House.” The structure concisely uses a linear floor plan combined with strategic large front and rear windows and a prefabricated steel frame that fits neatly into an unused alleyway at only 64 square meters (689 square feet).
Per the architects, the home “demonstrates how with a little more time spent coordinating structure, waste and supply pipes, staircases and cabinetry, the tightest of sites can be inhabited without several more wall, floor and ceiling linings needed to hide the often uncoordinated.”
Additional shortlisted projects will be announced via BBC’s Channel 4 on December 1st and December 8th respectively. A winner will be announced by the end of January as part of the two organizations' joint Grand Designs: House of the Year broadcast.
