A winner has been announced in an international competition for a new 8,020-hectare (19,818-acre) scientific development complex along the banks of China's Yangtze River.
Swedish firm Mandawoks has teamed up with UPDIS on the master plan for the new Xiakewan Science City in Jiangyin that will enhance the lakeside region through a network of wetland corridors and other ecological features.
The combined plan beat out 4 other finalists in a 48-entry international competition first announced in June.
According to the architect: “The master plan provides the new Science City with one bay and four banks. A series of vibrant public spaces trace the green and blue networks, supporting without compromising the natural systems."
"The structure concentrates urban life in the center of Xiakewan while limiting human activities and access in the surrounding wetland areas. This spatial division allows for the preservation and enhancement of local ecosystems while creating a poetic experience for those visiting the natural habitats.”
The plan is based around principles of a “resilient framework” that has guided the three-pronged development of the site.
A blue framework takes its shape from plant roots and serves as the main waterway for the development with improved cleaning and drainage systems. A green framework forms a contiguous landscape structure that envelops the urban program of the site. A third experience framework capitalizes on the built-in naturalism to create a more inspiring design for users and residents.
The project will incorporate five different core facilities including a National Endogenous Science and Technology Innovation Park, National Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, Wuxi’s Sub-Center of Comprehensive Service, a Recreation and Leisure Garden, and an Ecological Conservation and Safety Park. There are no construction dates available at this time.
