This year, for the 2019 Architecture at Zero competition, participants were tasked with designing a ZNE Student Recreation Center for a site on the California State University, Monterey Bay campus. Now in its eighth year, the annual competition is focused on promoting zero net energy design by giving students and professionals a particular brief. Sponsored by PG&E, along with the American Institute of Architects, California Council, the competition was prompted by California’s goal for all new residential construction to be ZNE by 2020 and all new commercial construction to be ZNE by 2030.
The 2019 winners vying for the competition's up-to-$25,000 prize, all demonstrate that ZNE design can be both aesthetically interesting and drive community change through innovative solutions. Below, take a look at the winning entries!
