Archtober 2018 is entering the home stretch of this month-long event series full of architecture-centered exhibitions, lectures, workshops, talks, conferences, film screenings, and tours across New York City's five boroughs.
For the eighth year in a row, Archinect & Bustler are proud to partner with Archtober and present you our weekly highlights from an eclectic calendar of events. Below are our recommendations for Archtober Week 4 and the remaining days of Week 5, October 23–31.

Designing an Urban Narrative: The Museum of the City of New York
The renovation of The Museum of the City of New York curates, mediates and spatializes our urban history in three eras - Port City, World City and Future of the City Lab. Studio Joseph will discuss this highly collaborative project.
Responsive Cities – Urban Heat Challenges
Growing population, densification of the urban environment, reduced vegetation and increased energy consumption all contribute to raising temperatures in cities. How can cities respond to this urban heat challenge? How can we ensure livability in cities against the backdrop of climate change? Building of the Day: 325 Kent | October 24
325 Kent is the first building to be completed as part of SHoP's Domino Sugar master plan. [...] The long facades of the building fan subtly to increase the sense of openness, while the dramatic bridging element creates an urbane backdrop to the plan's new waterfront park.
Design for Circularity: What if We Could Redesign Everything?
Join us for an exciting morning session at the Center for Architecture as we will take a deeper look at how leading companies design for circularity in the built environment. Experience the mindset, method, and material choices from eight circular economy pioneers, as these the take the stage and introduce the processes leading to their redesigns.

Building of the Day: Sculpture Studio | October 25
This project repurposes a long-underutilized industrial site to become a studio complex for a sculptor and his team. [...] The project includes the renovation of a 10,000sf warehouse building, and the construction of a new heavy equipment hall. Various studio and workspaces are provided for digital imaging, photography, woodworking, metalworking, sandblasting, and carving.
Connecting the Green Build Movement with the UN SDGs
Join for an discussion where we will explore the complementarity between
the Green Build Movement and the Sustainable Development Goals looking deeper into its
implementation in New York City.
Sciame Lecture Series: Amale Andraos
The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture presents, Amale
Andraos, Columbia, lectures on "To Reinvent Everything" as part of the
Sciame Fall Lecture Series.
Building of the Day: The Shed | October 26
The Shed is New York’s first arts center dedicated to commissioning,
producing, and presenting all types of performing arts, visual arts, and
popular culture. The Shed’s building—an innovative 200,000-square-foot
structure designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with
Rockwell Group—is designed to physically transform to support artists'
most ambitious ideas.
Brooklyn Navy Yard: Inside Industry at SITU Fabrication
SITU is an unconventional architecture practice that brings together
design, research, and fabrication for creative and social impact. This
walking tour will visit their fabrication space in the Brooklyn Navy
Yard and examine the Yard’s broader industrial ecosystem.
Pumpkitecture! Architectural Pumpkin Carving Competition
Start off your Halloween weekend at the Center for Architecture’s second
annual Pumpkitecture! competition! 20 New York City-based firms will go
gourd to gourd to once again compete for the Pritzkerpumpkin.
Building of the Day: Alice Austen House | October 27
Clear Comfort (a.k.a. the Alice Austen House) was built in 1690 as a one-room Dutch farmhouse. [...] The house successfully gained status as a historic landmark, and was
restored in the mid 1980s and in 2017 it was designated a National LGBTQ
Landmark.
Archtober Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
Bard Graduate Center, Architex, and the AIANY Women in Architecture and
Diversity and Inclusion Committee will host an Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to
address the lack of entries on Wikipedia about contributions by women,
LGBTQI communities and artists of color to the field of
architecture. This event is free and open to the public.
Behind-the-Architecture Photography Workshop
Learn a more embodied, somatic approach to architectural lighting
design. Lighting designer, architect, and artist Francis Milloy examines
our relationship with light and the built environment through an
analysis of space, light, darkness and form.
Building of the Day: Ocean Wonders: Sharks! | October 28
Ocean Wonders: Shark, a new 50,000 sf building at the NY Aquarium,
houses an exciting shark exhibit that conveys a sense of wonder of the
ocean, an urgency regarding the ocean’s health, and connects New Yorkers
to their local waters.
Drawing the Guggenheim: New York, Venice, Bilbao
Join visitors at the Guggenheim museums in New York, Venice, and Bilbao
for a special day of activities centered on drawing each museum’s iconic
architecture. New York programs include drop-in sketching, a drawing
workshop, studio art-making, and building tours.
Walking Tour – Renovating the Financial District: Skyscrapers, Plazas and the Impact of Zoning
The tour focuses on what has come to be known as “Skid(more) Row” (Chase
Manhattan Plaza, 140 Broadway and One Liberty Plaza) and the Water
Street corridor, once planned to be the route of the Second Avenue
Subway. We discuss adaptive reuse of older structures, and view downtown
Manhattan’s signature spires of the 1930s en route. Highlights
include buildings by SOM, Pei Cobb Freed, Kevin Roche, Philip Johnson,
Davis Brody, Tsao & McKown, and Frederic Schwartz, among others.
Building of the Day: African Burial Ground Memorial | October 29
Through Seven Elements, the Ancestral Chamber serves to physically,
spiritually, ritualistically and psychologically define the location
where the historic re-interment of remains and artifacts of 419 Africans
has taken place. [...] The African Burial Ground is widely considered to be one of America’s
most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century.
Walk Times Square at Night: Join urbanist and nighttime designer, Leni
Schwendinger, the official TSQ lighting designer. Learn a bit of the
history of the development and construction of this wonderland, and
share in discussions about nocturnal futures during this sociable
experience.
Designing the Future of the Tri-State Region
In 2017, the Regional Plan Association published the Fourth Regional
Plan, a long-range strategic plan for the New York Metropolitan Area.
Like RPA’s three previous plans, released in the 1920s, 1960s, and
1990s, the fourth plan was created to help elected officials,
policymakers, and advocates plan for the region’s future.
Building of the Day: 123 Melrose | October 30
Join us for a tour of Denizen, best characterized by the seven-story
murals showcased on the walls of the glass-sided corridors, each created
by a different Brooklyn artist. [...] The murals at Denizen are curated by ODA Architecture and the nonprofit organization OPEN.
Hacking the American City: Grassroots Citymaking from the NL to the US
Since 2012, a Dutch research collaborative called The Hackable City has been exploring ways to democratize the process of city-making around the world. [...] In this session, panelists representing a range of expertise will
discuss the potentials of The Hackable City's approach of
socially-driven smart cities in the United States as a way to deal with
the simultaneous challenges of equity and climate change.
Archtober Special Event: Passive House Towering in NYC
Join New York Passive House, Building Energy Exchange and the three
architectural firms making waves in New York City with their large
multifamily Passive House projects.
Building of the Day: Hunter’s Point South Waterfront Park | October 31
Recently opened to the public, Phase II of Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park transforms 5.5 acres of abandoned industrial landscape into a new waterfront park. Phase II begins south of 54th Avenue and wraps around Newtown Creek to complete the full vision of Hunter's Point South Park initiated in Phase I, and resulting in nearly 11 acres of a continuous waterfront park.
NY-London Exchange: Regional Planning
Join the Center for Architecture, New London Architecture, and The Urban Design Forum for the 14th New York London Dialogue.
The Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s
interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among
countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of
urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around
the world.
