An exhibition with “greatest hits” in its title is fitting for a pop-culture icon like Banksy. The only art exhibition of its kind in the UK, “Banksy, Greatest Hits: 2002-2008” at London's Lazinc art gallery revisits some of the infamous artist's most iconic works — including some pieces that even diehard fans haven't seen.
Curated by Lazinc co-founders Steve Lazarides (Banksy's original gallerist) and Wissam Al Mana, the timeless collection features a number of Banksy's stenciled canvases, cheeky paintings, sculptures, and limited-edition prints.
Read on for more about the exhibition.
Although you won't find any literal street-art pieces here, some notable highlights that you might already recognize include: “Love Is In The Air” (2006), the front cover of Banksy’s “Wall and Piece” manifesto; “Girl and Balloon” (2006); and the cleverly titled “Show Me the Monet” (2005), which shows the artist's own twist to Claude Monet’s 1899 painting, “Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies”.
Lazinc co-founder Steve Lazarides and Banksy go way back. They first met in 1997 when Lazarides, a photographer at the time, took Banksy's portrait for “Sleaze Nation” magazine. Acting as Banksy’s official photographer and gallerist until 2008, Lazarides oversaw the artist's high-profile sales and helped stage well-known exhibitions like “Crude Oil”, “Barely Legal” and “Turf War”.
“Banksy, Greatest Hits: 2002-2008” is open now through August 25.
