BetterBin: A next generation litter basket for New York City

How can we create a practical and efficient litter basket for New York City that reduces litter and better serves both Sanitation Workers and the public? The New York City Department of Sanitation and Van Alen Institute, in partnership with the Industrial Designers Society of America and the American Institute of Architects New York, are seeking an interdisciplinary design team to respond to BetterBin, a design competition to reimagine the iconic New York City litter basket.

Exploring the theme of water from material, aesthetic, cultural, political, poetic, and ecological perspectives, “Surface Tension” seeks to engage a range of topics integral to thinking about water in its broadest senses. These include climate change, survival, access, beauty, depth, gravity, networks, infrastructure, and more.
Wikitopia International Competition

An international collaboration between multiple organizations and individuals across Japan and the U.S., this competition seeks ideas for new designs, technologies, systems, and concepts that we can realistically expect to be implemented in the near- to mid-term future. In other words, what we would like to see is not complete science fiction, but forward-looking ideas that nevertheless can inform or become part of our research agenda in the coming years.
The Small House of Universal Design Award

Based on the German concept of “Schrebergärten”, this competition invites architects, designers, entrepreneurs, and students to design and create a small house. Following the impact Bauhaus had in its original days, we are looking for ideas which, whilst being aware of and offering solutions to the pressing issues of our current age, creatively take a step towards the future.
BAMB’s Reversible design competition
