Hassell was recently appointed as a design partner to develop Qianhai Mawan Mile, a new mixed-use precinct in Shenzhen's new Qianhai business district. The masterplan, which is still a work in progress, comprises above- and below-ground neighborhood zones, a continuous park, and pavilion buildings that are all connected by a winding, 1.6 kilometer skydeck.
Located in a rapidly evolving area, the project is designed to engage local residents and encourage social interaction and physical activity. The 1.6 kilometer-long skydeck connects the precinct’s buildings and park with surrounding buildings and city streets, while also providing an uninterrupted cycling and jogging path.
The neighborhood zones will include designated spaces for relaxing gardens, kids' play areas, group exercise activities, piazza with cafes, and open venues for outdoor events and art installations.
The masterplan will also include a entertainment precinct below ground, as well as sunken plazas with semi-outdoor dining areas and marketplaces. At the southern end of the project, three pavilion buildings will form a new cultural district. “Each [building] responds to its unique site and purpose while still expressing a common architectural language that’s in sync with this distinctive, fully integrated urban destination,” HASSELL describes.
