"Black Is Beautiful": Fashion and Consciousness | February 6

Taking place at the Museum of the City of New York, documentary photographer Kwame Brathwaite and his son Kwame S. Brathwaite join historian Tanisha Ford and designer Mimi Plange to reflect on the impact of Brathwaite Sr.’s pioneering “Black Is Beautiful” photographs. Beginning in the late 1950s and early ‘60s, Brathwaite helped to popularize an Afro-centric vision of female beauty featuring unstraightened hair and dark skin, then considered exotic in mainstream American media and popular culture.

The Projective Drawing: An Exploration of Art and Architecture in Contemporary Culture | Opening on February 6

The exhibition is based on The Projective Cast, a book published in 1995 by architectural historian Robin Evans, whose goal was to define a new way to explain how we “see” architecture that incorporated the balancing of all sensations (mental, physical and emotional) that underpin the human experience of built structures.

Ways of Knowing Cities | February 9

Ways of Knowing Cities is a one-day conference which brings together leading scholars and practitioners from across multiple disciplines to consider the role that technologies have played in changing how urban spaces and social life are structured and understood – both historically and in the present moment.
