Avenier Cornejo Architectes was awarded the coveted £10,000 prize for their Rue Bonnet social housing project in Paris. The young practice that has built a significant majority of their work in the social housing sector received the Architectural Review's 2017 emerging architecture award last week at a ceremony in Berlin with the judging panel applauding the firm's ambition to tackle important and pertinent social issues.
"I know from experience that everything is a battle in Paris – so to realize a beautiful social housing project in this city is a great achievement’" said German architect and jury member Matthias Sauerbruch. Seconding the strong praise, Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum added that "the project’s generosity in a challenging context is to be commended – the architects had to be clever with their priorities."
The winning red brick housing complex was selected from a shortlist of 14 by the judging panel and beat out projects by People's Architecture Office, RAUM, and 31/44 Architects among others. Joining the winner, the Fort Vechten Waterline Museum in Utrecht by Studio Anne Holtrop and José Luis Muñoz’ Casa de Los Vientos in Cádiz in Spain were both additionally selected as Highly Commended projects.
