Queens, NY is the city's largest borough, and its most diverse. Home to over 138 spoken languages, the cultural mashups of various shops, restaurants, bars, and places of worship represent the multitude of people that call Queens their home. So, too, do the borough's residences, that range from attached, semi-detached, and detached houses to small apartment buildings and reflect the incredible diversity of the borough's population.
All the Queens Houses—a new photography exhibition opening today at the Architectural League of New York's office gallery—seeks to put these houses and apartments on display. Queens has an incredibly diverse architectural style. With over 273 photographs comprising the exhibit, architect/artist Rafael Harrin-Ferri explores how themes of identity, diversity, evolution, and adaption are made manifest in these architectural solutions and how they reflect the range of the borough’s population.
Rafael Herrin-Ferri began the project in 2012 and has documented one third of the borough to date in over 5,000 photographs, focusing on façades and side elevations as well as distinctive building features. Depicting entryways, gardens, front doors, porches etc. and organized by neighborhood in alphabetical order, the League's exhibition includes 259 "house portraits" and 14 blow-up details that together, represent the most eclectic examples each neighborhood has to offer.
The exhibition ‘All the Queens Houses’ is on view from October 20 through December 15. Hours are from 2-6PM every Friday, at The Architectural League of New York, 594 Broadway, Suite 607. More information can be found here.
