Guy Nordenson will be presented with the 2017 Richard Neutra Award for Professional Excellence from the Cal Poly Pomona Department of Architecture on October 9. Established in honor of Richard Neutra's architectural legacy, the medal recognizes individuals for their dedication to the research and development of new environments in everyday life. Nordenson joins the award's esteemed roster of recipients, which includes Tadao Ando, Enrique Norten (listen to Archinect's previous interview with Norten here), Michael Rotondi, and Thom Mayne.
As an engineer, Guy Nordenson worked at Buckminster Fuller and Isamu Noguchi's joint studio in 1976. Then in 1987, he established the New York office of Ove Arup & Partners. Guy Nordenson founded Guy Nordenson and Associates (GNA) in 1997, and is a professor of architecture and structural engineering at Princeton University.
Guy Nordenson and Associates has collaborated with numerous notable architecture firms over the years, including SANAA, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Steven Holl Architects, Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup, Thomas Phifer and Partners, Michael Maltzan Architecture, and more.
Since 2007, GNA has worked with stakeholders at local and national levels to develop strategies for climate change and coastal resilience — which reflects Neutra's “Survival Through Design,” or the notion that planners have a responsibility to connect their design practice with science and research in diverse fields.
Guy Nordenson will receive the medal during an awards ceremony and will give a special lecture at Cal Poly Pomona's University Theater on October 9, starting at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be followed by an hour-long book signing in the theatre lobby. All events are free and open to everyone!
