A superblock is a large urban block of mixed-use buildings, often cut off from city traffic. In China there are a dozen superblocks built each day, according to this article in The Economist. Many experts have shown how these superblocks can be unsustainable, from the individual to global scale. An architect from UC Berkeley, Harrison Fraker, has developed a sustainable approach to building these superblocks, by making them almostly completely self-sustaining. The unfortunate reality, however, is that developers, city planners, and government agencies don't share the same priorities, so it's unlikely this dire problem will be solved in the near future.
