From the boundary-pushing team of archi-visionaries who brought us the fabulous Fab Tree Hab comes a new (and somewhat disgusting) way to grow a structure - using animal flesh! The In Vitro Meat Habitat is a futuristic concept home composed of meat cells grown in a lab. We can't imagine that these grizzly residences are going be replacing suburban tract homes anytime soon, but it sure is a provocative idea! The creator of the concept, Mitchell Joachim, is a futurist with a twist- he says he is actually developing the concept in a lab. Inhabitat

Hey futurist, where's the beef?
Can't wait for the savory smells and 'patina' stemming from roasting in a nice summer heat wave... You could use a trellis overhead to create interesting grill patterns
I'm waiting for the vegans to chime in
hehe david. if there was a 'like' button, i'd click it.
corn fed or grass fed?
i have one word to say to this project...
WHY?!
it would be even better wrapped in bacon.
what a waste of time.
..still trying to see what about this project inhabit thinks is "provocative"
"dude...check this rendering...doesn't it look like ...meat?"
"dude...what if it actually was meat"

"but really. it could totally happen. don't scientists make flesh from cultures and stuff right? what if you just made a friggen house? like a house made of meat? you could eat whenever you wanted! oh man, that's blowin my mind, that'd be so rad."

I LOVE the idea of growing a building, but rather than meat I think growing something akin to a clamshell makes more sense. When the living stuff dies, the shell would still be there.
What's interesting about it is the notion of a building as "living" - meaning having the self-healing and self-adjusting qualities that our bodies have. In the article Joachim says he envisions a wall in which tissues, skin and bones replace insulation, siding, and studs respectively. For fenestration, or openings of windows and doors, he envisions sphincter muscles that can open and close. This is how the entire green movement is asking our buildings to perform, correct? Insulation that acts like fat, louvers that act like pores and pupils. The study of a meat/body house is one more way to further the discussion and possibilities.
That said: (1) we were all housed in a "meat house" in utero, and (2) I'm glad I'm not the intern asked to build the scale model.
Growing architecture.. how come that idea is so appealing..? I love this topic! But meat, like the body, needs to consume to be able to grow. Reminds me of one of my drawings: http://sandrosetola.com/images/O.T.I.S.jpg
As far as arbor sculpture is concerned; In the Netherlands the artist Marinus Boezem is well known for his cathedral made of trees in Flevoland. it's been growing since 1987: http://landart.web-log.nl/mijn_weblog/images/marinus_boezem_1.jpg
What i always thought would be a great invention is a pot for a plant that grows bigger as the plant grows bigger over time. That way you don't have to move the plant to bigger pots from time to time.. With all that great biotechnology around you'd say someone should be able to make some kind of artificial wood that grows in any shape you want it to be, preferably controlled by your Iphone, right?
@materialeve: the clamshell idea I love that one as well and I've been making drawings and sculptures based on that idea for about three years now; mind you; you know what happens when an intruder enters a clamshell.. Beachhouse or Ghosthouse?: http://sandrosetola.com/images/bhouse3webmed.jpg
oh well, thanks for bringing these ideas up and i hope you don't me sharing some with you.
