“Stephen Ayers played a very significant role in seeing to it that we got what we have, and it’s only fitting now that he continue for another 10 years so that when the plumbing starts to leak, he will know where to go to fix it,” Sen. Bob Bennett (Utah) said.
the capitol architect post was a topic of discussion here on archinect a couple of years ago when the previous (beleaguered) AoC retired.
there had been numerous cost over-runs and scheduling issues with the visitor's center project - arguably because of the changing brief of the client. (post 9/11 issues triggered a pretty significant re-thinking of a lot of things.)
because of the difficulties there was discussion of having a non-architect fill the role, the suggestion from lawmakers being that the post required a politico/management type rather than an architect.
imagine the Architect of the Capitol not actually being an architect...
so this is pretty good news!
