One of the great feats of 20th-century engineering, a landmark of modernist architecture is facing demolition. Late last month, the Russian State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting agreed to the dismantling of the Shabolovka radio tower in Moscow.
This is the Eiffel Tower of Russia, a 50-story conical structure of steel latticework, shaped roughly like a collapsing telescope, designed by the engineer Vladimir Shukhov.

I absolutely love the irony that Liz Diller has signed the petition for this preservation effort.
It's pretty ugly-looking. Not surprised they want to tear it down.
Nooo! Where else are the kids supposed to play?
Omg. Is that girl out of her fuckin mind. I can't even look at that pic. Makes me nervous.
@ HotelSphinx,
My thoughts exactly!
It's a Russian thing. Follow Alex's link.
What would ugly have to do with it's functionality or minumum use of material? Are we still judging constructivist works through the eyes of Kant? or Santayana's Sense of Beauty? There is scientific aesthetic that finds visual and intellectual pleasures from how things are constructed, assembled and function. The precedent , of course, is nature, without any 'additional' aesthetic props. It is what it is.
