Bill Moggridge is not your average design director, though he will take over what is arguably The Nation's design museum—the Cooper-Hewitt's part of the Smithsonian after all. Bypassing such hyped specialists as Paolo Antonelli of MoMA and Aaron Betsky of Cincinati, the C-H went instead with the inventor of the first laptop, among other things.

I find the appointment of Bill Moggridge as director of the Cooper-Hewitt and John Maeda as president of RISD signs that designers are being recognized as general problem-solvers. Designers envision everything from skyscrapers to cities and can also envision and lead schools and museums.
